About The Program...

Who can attend?

Over 250+ students from across the state of Texas will be selected by their state legislator through a competitive process to participate. Desired student characteristics include:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Texas resident
  • Currently in his/her junior year of high school (rising senior)
  • Interest in and an aptitude for math, science, engineering, or computer science
  • Able to commit to a one-year relationship with JSC, including a designated one-week residential experience during the summer
  • Access to the Internet (home, school, or public library)

Educators from across Texas will be selected to serve as counselors during the summer. Counselors will ideally be math and/or science teachers.

What will the students do?

Program will include interactive web-based activities and a one-week summer session at JSC, which will include:

  • Briefings; tours of JSC facilities; field trips to Space Center Houston, Moody Gardens, and The Houston Museum of Natural Science Challenger Center; a team project in Lunar or Mars exploration; and mentoring by NASA engineers.

Students and counselors will be provided transportation, housing, and food during the week, as well as a stipend to handle travel to and from JSC. Counselors will receive an additional stipend in lieu of salary.

What is the timeline?

  • August: State Legislators will receive information describing the program, its guidelines, and outlining their roles in the selection process
  • September-October: Application and selection process for students
  • November-May: Students engage in distance learning assignments and on-line discussions to learn more about space exploration, JSC mentors, and the other participants
  • June-July: Summer experience (week-long sessions are offered)
  • August-October: Students maintain contact with JSC engineers through on-line mentoring.
