November 17, 2000 Dear Texas Aerospace Scholar: Congratulations! You’ve been nominated by your legislator to participate in the Texas Aerospace Scholars (TAS) program as an alternate. As an Aerospace Scholar alternate there will be certain expectations of you. You will be notified by January 15, 2001 if you will be accepted into the program as a primary student. A recent donation by the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo will allow us to select an additional 25 students from the alternate pool. Your completion of the assignments will be a significant factor as we make select alternates to become primary students. Last year we were able to accept many of the alternates so make sure you keep up with your assignments! You will need access to the Internet, a word processing application, a simple graphics application (like Paint) or scanner (to submit drawings) and e-mail. Final projects will be posted on the TASP Scholars Page Gallery. The Scholars Page at http://aerospacescholars.org/scholars/index.htm contains all of the information you will need to begin your activities, learn about the summer workshop, and will be continually updated on information about the program. We’ve enclosed a brief general description of the program curriculum that will get you started. As you know, the program is divided into two areas—the on-line activities and the summer workshop. The on-line activities begin on November 17th, and alternates are expected to complete the first four assignments by January 12, 2001. In the event that you are selected as a primary student, there will be an additional eight activities and a final project that you will need to complete in order to be eligible to attend the summer workshop. A second round of alternates will be accepted into the program on March 15, 2001. To help us prepare for your possible participation in the summer workshop, we need you register for the program and complete your first assignment before December 4, 2000. To do this you will need to register a hotmail e-mail account at: http://www.hotmail.com/. This e-mail address must have your first initial and last name (any numbers if necessary) and will be the only acceptable e-mail address for the program. Please register on-line for TAS at this website: http://aerospacescholars.org/scholars/studentview.asp You will be prompted for a password when you register, it will be your last name and your 3-digit password. For questions about travel, lodging, agenda, schedules, etc., please visit the main Web Page at http://aerospacescholars.jsc.nasa.gov/ We have enclosed information for your parents that will answer their questions. Please be sure to give it to them as soon as possible. All future communication, including additional information about your NASA visit, will be sent to you via e-mail. In the meantime, please visit the Scholars Page for more information or feel free to contact us at 281-483-4112 or via e-mail at rita.k.karl1@.jsc.nasa.gov with any questions. Sincerely, Rita Karl Curriculum Information/Parent Information/Commitment and Parental Release Forms |
