Life on Mars

In 1996, David McKay and colleagues at NASA’s Johnson Space Center announced the discovery of what they believe to be evidence for fossil remains of tiny bacteria in a meteorite from Mars. The meteorite was blasted off the surface of Mars about 15 million years ago and had traveled through space until it landed on Earth. This meteorite and other Mars meteorites were found in Antarctica. This is quite different from the popular myths of a civilization that could build canals and launch an invasion of Earth!

Look at the images below...

  • Does this look like fossil evidence of life to you?
  • How would you go about continuing to explore the possibility of life on Mars?
  • NASA is contemplating a sample return mission to bring back rocks from the planet. What risks might this pose to people on Earth?
