How often
do I need to turn in my on-line assignments?
Assignments should be turned
in (in sequential order) as you complete them beginning December
1st. One assignment is due every two weeks.
Assignments should be sent via the Comm
Link.
Students who do not complete
the first four assignments by January 12th, 2001 will be
replaced by their alternates. Students who have not completed
the first 8 assignments by March 9th, 2001 will be replaced
by their alternates. Alternates must have completed the assignments
on time in order to be considered.
Your assignments will be reviewed by teachers
who will send you their comments via e-mail. Your Final Project will
be reviewed by your NASA mentor who will send you their comments via
e-mail. Final projects are due 2 weeks before your internship begins.
A list of final project due dates can be found on the Final
Project page.

What
do I do if I am an alternate?
Alternates are considered
full-fledged members of the Texas Aerospace Scholars on-line
education program and are expected to complete the assignments.
If you complete the first four assignments on time you are
qualified to replace your primary (if they do not fulfill
their obligations) on January 15th, 2001. You will then be
able to attend the free summer workshop at NASA. If you complete
the first eight assignments on time you are qualified to
replace your primary on March 12th, 2001 (if they do not
fulfill their obligations). You will then be able to attend
the free summer workshop at NASA.

Where
will my final project be posted?
Your project will be
posted on the Scholars' Gallery page. Only your first name
and the name of the legislator who nominated you will appear
with your work. Projects will be grouped by team. Your NASA
engineer mentor will review your projects and give you feedback.

What
software should I use to submit my assignments?
You can only submit
assignments using Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, or Edit/Copy
~ Edit/Paste into the Comm Link Text box from other programs.
JPEG is the only acceptable graphic format.

How
many students will be attending the workshop?
Twenty-five students
have been selected to attend each 1-week workshop. 3 teacher
counselors, 3 mentors, and 3 college student co-ops will
also participate. You will be assigned to a team of 8 or
9 students, and will also be assigned 1 mentor, 1 co-op,
and 1 teacher. Each team will meet via an e-mail round-robin
and a chat session 2 weeks before the on-site workshop begins.
There are also 2 previous chat sessions that will be open
to all participants.

What
is the weather like in Houston? Is there anything special
I should bring?
Houston in July is very
hot and humid. Plan to bring cool, loose-fitting clothing
(see Dress
Code). Sunscreen is highly recommended for any outdoor
activities. You may also want to bring a light jacket to
wear indoors.

Which
week during the summer will I be visiting NASA?
You need to fill out
the on-line Week Selection and Travel Form by April 16th,
2001. You will be asked to choose your first, second and
third choices and will be assigned to one of those weeks.

What
team will I be on?
Students will be assigned
to either the lunar or Mars Getting There, Living There and
Working There teams by April 30th, 2001.

Can
my parents visit during the week?
No. Parents are invited
to attend the closing luncheon at the end of the week on
Friday afternoon. Students will arrive on Sunday and leave
on the following Friday. Parents who drive students and need
a place to stay Sunday night or plan to attend the luncheon
and stay over the following Friday night will be furnished
with a list of moderately priced hotels in the area.

What
if I have a medical condition that requires I take medicine
during the day?
Just bring your medication
with you during the day and please let us know about your
requirement on your Emergency Medical Release Form that will
be sent to you. If you have medicine that needs refrigeration
and you must take it during the day, we can make arrangements
as long as we know ahead of time.

Where
will I stay?
You will be housed two
to a suite (same sex) at a residential hotel near the Johnson
Space Center. All meals will be provided, and you will be
chaperoned at all times.

What
will I do?
You will be assigned
to a team and a NASA engineer as a mentor. Teams will complete
a lunar or Mars Exploration design project during the week.
You will also tour JSC, listen to presentations by NASA engineers
and an astronaut, experience Mars Missions at the Challenger
Center and visit Space Center Houston (the official NASA
visitor's center). To see an itinerary visit the Schedule
Page.

Will
I need money?
Yes, if you would like to purchase
souvenirs at gift shops and for snacks in between meals. We recommend
you bring around $50.00. Please read the area in the General
Information of the website concerning Spending
Money.

Is
there somewhere at JSC to buy camera film?
Yes, you can buy film
at either of the JSC Gift Shops. However, it is probably
much cheaper to buy film before you come. Last year the typical
student went through 3-4 rolls of film. A digital CD of pictures
taken during the week will also be handed out at the end
of the week.

How
do I arrange my travel to go to Houston?
First, read the area about Transportation
to the workshop. You will be reimbursed for mileage, if you are driving,
or have your flights arranged for you (out of a major airport) if you
live more than 50 miles from Houston. You will have to fill out a Week
Selection and Travel Form on-line that will be due by April 16th
in order to qualify for free travel.

How
do I get from the airport to where we are staying?
You will be met at the
information desk in baggage claim by a person wearing a TAS
shirt and is holding a TAS sign. From there you will be transported
to the residential hotel, where the TASP Program Manager
and counselors will meet you.

Why
do I have to open a Hotmail account?
There are 230 students
involved with this program. Keep in mind that each student
must turn in 12 assignments and a final project. With so
many assignments due it is important that we be able to distinguish
between students. This also helps your reviewers, mentors,
and co-ops to learn who you are.

What
will I eat?
Meals are supplied for
you including: continental breakfast, cafeteria lunch, and
various trips off-site for dinner (includes the infamous
Pe-Te's Barbeque across from the Ellington Air Field).
