This is very important information that you will need for your distance education program and your one-week visit to the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Please take time to review all of the links listed below, and feel free to contact us with any questions!


Activities

12 different activities have been compiled to prepare you for your week JSC and to familiarize you with space exploration. These activities should be submitted (in sequential order) one every two weeks. The first 4 activities are due by January 12, 2001. Alternates will replace students who have not completed their activities at this time. Alternates must have completed the activities to be chosen as program primaries.

The second four activities are due March 9, 2001. Alternates will replace students who have not completed their activities at this time. Alternates must have completed the activities to be chosen as their districts' primary student. The last four activities are due on May 4th. Students who have not completed the 12 activities at this time will not be able to attend the summer workshop. All activities should be submitted via the Comm Link. Each activity will be reviewed by e-mail by a Texas certified teacher.

Projects

A final project will be submitted 2 weeks before you are scheduled to arrive at JSC. The project you submit will be posted on this web page to be viewed by parents, legislators, NASA engineering mentors, and NASA administrators. All work will be posted with the student's first name and the name of the student's legislator to ensure privacy. More information about the project can be found at Projects.


Alternates

Alternates are considered full-fledged participants in the Texas Aerospace Scholars on-line program. They are expected to complete one assignment every two weeks beginning with the first assignment due December 4, 2001. Alternates are eligible to replace the primary scholars for their district who do not completed their assignments by the required due date. Alternates will be notified on January 15, 2001 or March 12, 2001 of their acceptance into the summer workshop.

Follow-Up Commitment

You will continue to be an Aerospace Scholar after your distance education program and on-site internship ends. You will be encouraged to

  • Maintain an e-mail relationship with your team mentor
  • Continue to stay in touch with fellow scholars
  • Continue to visit the TASP web site
  • Recommend the program to others
  • Help recruit new students, if requested by your legislator
  • Appear to testify in Austin about the program, if requested by the legislature
  • Participate in on-line chat sessions for new students, if interested
  • Stay in contact with the TASP, as required, and to give information concerning your choice of college, choice of major, and post-graduation plans

Mentors

Selected NASA engineers will act as mentors to the scholars during the year and at the summer workshop. Mentors will attend on line discussion groups during the year to help answer questions about the on-line information and activities. Mentors will be assigned teams for the summer workshop and get acquainted with their team, educator, and co-op via an e-mail round-robin and an on-line discussion. Mentors will review team member's final projects. Mentors will facilitate the team projects completed during the summer workshop.


On-Line Discussions

On-line discussions with NASA mentors and TAS staff will occur during the year. The first discussions will focus on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station, the second on the Moon and Mars. Small groups of scholars will be along with mentors assigned via e-mail to attend at a specific date and time. Discussions will be held Monday-Friday at 3:00, 4:00 and 5:00pm. The third discussion will be for selected teams to discuss their team projects and be held two weeks before their assigned summer workshop. Open theme discussions will be held weekly for any interested scholars on the theme topics of Getting There, Living There and Working There. Discussion Times for teams and themes will be sent to participants via e-mail.

Shuttle/Station - Week of January 22, 2001

Moon//Mars - Week of March 19, 2001.

Team Chats - Weekly beginning the week of May 21, 2001.

Open Theme Chats (Getting There, Living There, Working There) - Weekly beginning the week of May 21, 2001.
