Space Camps for Yorkshire Schools
ISSET together with Yorkshire Forward and Space Connections are offering a FREE Space Camp at your school for the summer term. Our Space Ambassadors project is sending trained graduates and undergraduates to schools in Yorkshire to run a Space Camp for 5 days.
Space Camp is a five day adventure that gives students a “Learning meets Fun” approach to science with exciting hands-on activities and practical experiments. Students make and fly some great gravity-defying models, explore the solar system, plan a space mission, really think and enjoy themselves. They can see that humans’ greatest achievements are based on many of the things that they already know.
- Day 1 explores why we send people into space, understanding our solar system, where it fits into the universe and what is in our night sky.
- Day 2 and 3 are about defying gravity and launching rockets
- Day 4 is about living in space and going to Mars
- Day 5 is a summary day including ‘is there life out there?
The purpose of Space Camp is:
- To enthuse young people with the value of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
- To give them an insight into the wonder, progress and achievement that can only be gained through STEM.
- To give a ‘learning meets fun’ approach to raising the ambitions of the boys and girls to working in STEM to provide a better life style for themselves and their families.
- To give a glimpse, through the context of space exploration, of the exciting opportunities that can only be grasped by those who work at their education and in STEM in particular.
Space Camp has proved extremely popular with both teachers and students, and we have had very positive feed back, typically that it was the best fun they have ever had whilst learning.
Our Space Ambassadors can come to your school during May, June and July. The Programme is supported by Yorkshire Forward in partnership with Space Connections so the course is completely free to schools. You will also receive a free Space Camp resource pack for your school worth £150 to keep and use again. The only things you need to provide are some consumables (paper, pens, glue etc).
If you are interested, please email admin@isset.org or phone 029 2071 0295 for more information.
Numbers are limited, so please get back to us as soon as possible so we can book your place.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE:
A teacher must accompany the students at all times. Our Space Ambassadors are not insured to be responsible for the students’ health and safety and cannot supervise them alone. Also, the teacher can learn how to deliver the Space Camp course themselves and use it with future classes.
The Space Ambassador will need access to a computer/laptop, digital projector and speakers to be able to show videos and display diagrams to the students.
It would be helpful, but not essential, for the students to have access to computers.
ISSET is an educational charity formed in 1998. ISSET works to utilise the inspiration of space exploration to motivate young people and inculcate the NASA ‘you can do it’ spirit.
