'inspiring and motivating'
Pauleen Spearing-Ewyn

If you are concerned about your physics knowledge and
want to avoid teaching 'from the book' whilst becoming more able to
plan and deliver exciting and creative physics lessons then this course
is for you!
Regardless of subject specialism all science teachers
are expected to teach KS3 science and increasingly GCSE as well. For
many non-specialists, teaching physics can raise anxieties that can
often lead to a very didactic approach.
This course addresses these concerns and concentrates on enabling
teachers to be more effective in the teaching and learning of physics.
There is an emphasis on active forms of learning and the training
includes
- Hands-on workshops
- Innovative demonstrations
- Ideas for teaching approaches and activities
- Sessions to increase understanding of physics
- Support to increase teacher confidence in physics
The course has been successful in bolstering understanding of physics
and improving confidence together with increasing student enjoyment
and attainment in physics.
Areas of coverage include:
Day 1:
- Electrical phenomena
- Magnetism
- Light and Sound
- Electromagnetic spectrum
- Energy
Day 2:
- Forces and Gravity
- Space Sciences
- Radioactivity and atomic structure
- Ideas of scale in time and space
- Critical thinking skills (e.g. "Did we REALLY go to the
Moon?")
The programme takes place as two complementary training days and
gives an insight into all topic areas in the physics curriculum. Applicants
may apply for either day or the complete course.

- Increase confidence in teaching physics
- Enable better planning
- Increase active and participative styles of learning
- Make physics imaginative and exciting
- Increase student attainment
