Science lies at the core of the National Curriculum
in KS1 and KS2. For many teachers without a background in the sciences,
teaching of the subject can raise anxieties about subject knowledge
that can often lead to a very formulaic teaching approach geared purely
towards the assessment framework.
This course addresses these concerns and concentrates on boosting
teacher understanding of fundamental concepts to enable them to be
more effective in the teaching and learning of science. There is an
emphasis on physics topics and active forms of learning- the training
includes:
-
Masterclasses to increase teacher understanding of science
-
Support to increase teacher confidence in science
-
Hands-on workshops
-
Ideas for teaching approaches and activities
The course has been successful in bolstering understanding of physics
and improving confidence together with increasing student enjoyment
and attainment in science.
Areas of coverage include:
Day 1:
- Life processes and living things
- Materials, their properties and atoms
- Electricity
Day 2:
- Forces and motion
- Light and sound
- The Earth and beyond
The programme takes place as two complementary training days and
gives an insight into all topic areas in the science curriculum with
an emphasis on physics. Applicants may apply for either day or the
complete course.

- Increase teacher confidence in science
- Enable better planning
- Increase active and participative styles of learning
- Make science imaginative and exciting
- Increase pupil attainment
